What would God's own city look like?
St Augustine describes the city of God as stable, eternal, and a source of eternal consolation. His city is now a vast frozen space not of contemplation but of despair and disaster. God has left the place that he never occupied in the first place. St Augustine would cry at the desolation of his ideal city.
