Meet me at the edge of the world.
Portraits of refugee women in temporary housing, Birmingham.
Vesuvius, Italy.
During my visit to Vesuvius, I realized that this towering cone is the first glimpse of Europe for many asylum seekers. The photographs of these women refugees were captured during a test shoot for a project with the Refugee Council. These two locations symbolize the beginning and end of their journey to "safety," and I pondered whether, in 20 or 30 years, these women will still recall their first view of Europe. As a European residing in the UK, I vividly remember my own first impression of Birmingham. Their first impression of Europe is somehow a.legorical; hostile and uncompromising.
