My home region, le Var, is a popular tourist destination, with St-Tropez representing the challenges of excessive tourism. The topic of tourism is complex; an overload of visitors can be just as harmful as having too few. Mass tourism is causing friction with residents and depleting local resources. To maintain sustainability in these areas, we may need to reduce tourism by half or even two-thirds. However, many of the world’s most famous tourist spots have few alternatives as other industries have declined. Simply eliminating tourists isn’t the straightforward solution we might wish it to be. Using popular local beaches I question what life would be without tourists, in this case literally.
